Winter is a time for embracing the indoors: rainy days in the kitchen, evenings by the fire, and a slower pace that lets you notice the quality of the spaces around you. It is also a good moment to reflect on the work that shaped the past year and to share what we are looking forward to in the one ahead.
Lafayette Renovation: Warm Materials and a Home Built for Winter
The Lafayette Renovation is one of our most complete expressions of integrated residential design. Warm wood paneling, a generous kitchen island, a fireplace as the heart of the living space, and a built-in bar with shutter doors: every element was chosen to make the home feel genuinely comfortable in the colder months while remaining elegant and considered year-round. This project reflects how we approach whole-home renovations, not as a series of disconnected upgrades, but as a single cohesive act that respects the architecture and serves the people living in it.
Island Savoy Market: Neighborhood Design in Alameda
Island Savoy Market: Alameda, CA
Neighborhood markets are a staple of Bay Area community life, and this year we helped bring a new one to Alameda. Island Savoy Market at 1200 Lincoln Avenue is a light-filled space stocked with well-appointed goods and a spot to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. The project was a labor of love for the owners, who put their heart and soul into the store, and we were glad to be part of the effort.
Our exterior design and renderings also helped the owners secure a grant from the City of Alameda, a reminder that good design has practical as well as aesthetic value. If you are in the neighborhood on a rainy weekend, stop in and support a great local business.
Looking Back at 2022, Looking Ahead to 2023
2022 was a full year. We built houses large and small, continued work on projects for small businesses and UC Berkeley, and saw press coverage that reflected the breadth of what we do. As we move into 2023, we have new residential projects on the boards, both inside and out, and we are finally nearing the completion of our ground-up New York residence. Tierney Conner Architecture is an Oakland-based studio founded in 2004 that integrates architecture, interior design, and landscape design in-house for custom residential, multi-family, and commercial clients across the East Bay and San Francisco Bay Area. The practice is led by partners Anne Tierney, Erin Conner, and J. Jarrell Conner, and is located at 363 17th Street in downtown Oakland.
