HYGGE AT HOME - FALL 2025

It’s no secret that we the people at Tierney Conner are inspired by all things Danish, and unsurprisingly the word “hygge” (hyoo· guh) often pops up in our office conversations and during our design process.

Hygge is often used to describe coziness, or a feeling of warmth and well-being – an instance when everything feels just right.  In our projects, we design to create these perfect moments by searching out and accentuating the soul of a space, by fostering togetherness through function and adjacency, and by quietly attending to details that create everyday pleasures.

As we start down the path to shorter days and cooler weather, one recently completed project has us looking forward to slowing down and getting comfortable with long evenings inside.  A quintessential family gathering space, where the casual conversation between modern and traditional vernacular sets an airy, yet richly inviting scene for cooking, dining, drinking, entertaining, relaxing, and all things hygge.

These blissful long evenings, however, are not here quite yet – there is still time to get out and engage our wonderful Bay Area before we hunker down for the Holidays.  Below we highlight a couple of interesting events and other tidbits, and we look forward to checking in after the new year.

SAN FRANCISCO FALL SHOW

Interested in a re-fresh for your home’s interior?  The San Francisco Fall Show will take place at Fort Mason from October 16 through October 19.  This annual favorite features local and international purveyors of art, antiques, furniture, jewelry and a range of decorative objects.  There will be an opening Gala and a range of different panels & lectures.  A preview of exhibitors and events can be found on their website and tickets can be purchased in advance.

THE RE-IMAGINED CITY

The Center for Architecture & Design recently unveiled an exhibit on the last 25 years of staggering urban improvements in the city of San Francisco. The Re-Imagined City: San Francisco 2000-2025, curated by John King & Robin Abad, chronicles large scale changes that reflect the cultural and civic pulse of the dynamic city, such as Chrissy Field, the Ferry Building and the California Academy of Sciences.  The exhibit runs until January 19, 2026.

EAMES INSTITUTE

Old news, but still very exciting to hear!  The beloved Eames Institute has major plans to transform the old Birkenstock campus in Novato into a stunning museum.  Swiss Architects Herzog & DeMeuron will lead the bold design effort, while partnering with local firm EHDD, to transform the legendary concrete structure into a “cultural destination.”  The museum will offer an array of exhibit areas, makerspaces, workshops and public open spaces - slated to be completed in 2028.

HYGGE - THE DANISH WAY TO LIVE WELL

If you are ready to take a break and are interested in further exploring the Danish concept of hygge, we recommend The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well.  The book, written by Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, is a manifesto of sorts that introduces the many principles of hygge and offers ideas on how to incorporate them into your home and life :)
