Poolside: Pool and Water Design in Bay Area Outdoor Living
In this issue, we look at the role of water and pool design in outdoor living, drawing on recent Tierney Conner projects in Orinda, Kentfield, and Lafayette, along with a selection of favorite poolside furnishings for modern summer living.
Orinda, East Bay Residence
Now that the warm weather is here, we are finally poolside. Cool pools and water features bring simple pleasure to everyday life, and water has played an important role in architecture throughout history, with integral moments in Tierney Conner projects over the years. A pool area is a perfect canvas for outdoor summer living. In this issue, we take a closer look at how water shapes several recent projects, from Orinda to Rockridge to Kentfield, Marin to Lafayette, along with a few of our favorite poolside furnishings.
Marin Residence
Lounging is a quintessential poolside activity, and there is an abundance of well-designed lounge chairs that are both beautiful and functional. A favorite is the 1966 Collection Contour Chaise, designed by Richard Schultz for Knoll. Part of MoMA's permanent collection, it has a clean-lined, powder-coated cast aluminum frame that is intrinsically durable, and it comes in a range of colors that pair well with other pieces from the same collection.
Poolside Furnishings We Love
Bluff Lounge - Created by Concreteworks, established in the East Bay in 1991, this low-down lounge is the epitome of modern.
Palissade Cord Chaise Lounge - A more economical option that reinterprets traditional wicker and pairs it with a contemporary metal frame thanks to HAY, a Danish company that partners with designers around the world to create furniture with the belief that “good design is everyone’s right.”
Sponeck Armchair & Ottoman - Coming from the ever-innovative Swisspearl Group and designed by Julia von Sponeck, this fiber-cement duo is ergonomic, strong and unique in its form and construction.
Illum Lounger - Part of a collection from Belgian design house Tribu and inspired by Scandinavian furniture forms – adjustable and comfortable!
